Thought for the Day

(courtesy of Word a Day)
"The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error."

John Stuart Mill, philosopher and economist (1806-1873)

Great quote. I am going to post it on my blog. I am having a rather interesting discussion with an anonymous commenter who keeps wanting to put me into a box of some sort so he can dismiss the box instead of my ideas, which seem to piss him off to no end. Although I disagree with him, I find that in trying to understand the counter-arguments, I greatly increase the depth of my own understanding.

I've been trying to keep up with that. I have not commented because I have nothing to contribute, but am really enjoying reading the exchange (and the predominance of your cool head).

By the way, I tagged you (rather passive-agressively) in my blog yesterday to come up with 6 random things about yourself (through the AisAAcademy blog). If you choose to participate, let me know so I can be sure to read it.

Thanks.
