Sabrina (1954)

As a little embedding video exercise, I'd like to share this video from YouTube from the 1954 movie, Sabrina. I really enjoy this movie for several reasons, not the least of which is the presence of Audrey Hepburn, but the scene presented in this snippet is not only really funny, but also incredibly pro-industrialist. It's a long clip (7+ minutes), but if you haven't watched the entire movie, you might just want to take a peek.

Boy, do I love those old movies. "His Girl Friday", "Philadelphia Story"...

So at 1min 33sec, when they show the Larrabee Copper, Larrabee Mining... etc etc etc... and the camera takes in the sum total of all the Larrabee holdings and then pans up to the majestic building... I got chills.

And then I wondered what the Average Joe would feel when he saw that scene. Would he look at it and say "oh, he must be a nasty Robber Baron!" Sadly, I think so.

But of course, that's because Average Joe is a bozo.

It's just a great movie, isn't it? I haven't seen it in way too long. Audrey Hepburn is just beautiful.

For reasons that I can't explain I have never been able to make it all the way through "His Girl Friday" - I always, always fall asleep (at least 5 attempts to date). And I LOVE Cary Grant! "Philadelphia Story" is yar, no doubt about it, but did you know that there is a musical based on the story called "High Society" with Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelley, and Bing Crosby? I just found that out this year!

SB and I would trade out Jimmy Stewart for Frank Sinatra (even though we love Jimmy), but he would trade Katharine for Grace - NEVER! Katharine Hepburn was my favorite actress.

What I find the most amazing about Sabrina is that I believe the relationship between the gorgeous ingenue and the crusty industrialist.

Stephen and I spent this last week at the Objectivist Conference ( OCON ) in Boston. We started out the week staying in town, but finished it off commuting. As we stayed at the Seaport Hotel at the beginning of the week when we knew almost no one, we didn’t take advantage of the social atmosphere, but were happily sequestered in our room. After getting to know a few people, we dined, drank, and were generally merry with those few. There's No Place Like Home

Vacation was fun, but I like being home. I guess I'm just boring that way. There was plenty of sun, sand, salt water kisses, family, food, and fun. Maybe it was the lack of tutus and tiaras. Now we're all experiencing a slight vacation hangover and need to rest. It's a good thing we have a few days before work and school.
