Truly Scary

The only thing scarier than these guys is how much I love this song. It's time for me to get some new music people!

Does anyone have any music that has come out in the last five years or so that they actually like?

And I've tried. Lordy, lordy knows I've tried. But after Maria McKee from her Lone Justice days, I just can't bring myself around to enjoying any country music. Sorry, BIL.

Love it! Saw them in Houston on the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me tour. They were really good! And my husband's band in college played this song, so it's got nice memories for that reason, too.

Last 5 years, hmmmm....White Stripes is good, but might need to grow on you a bit. Although their latest, which came out 18 months ago-ish isn't quite as good as their earlier stuff which is older than 5 years.

I'm not so much into the country either, but sometimes bluegrass is fun when I'm in the mood for it.

I haven't listened to the radio in ages (hello? what happened to my favorite alternative station that got changed to a pop music format?).

I'm not into new singers performing old standards, but if you've ever had an inkling, there's Michael Buble. I listen to him occasionally, but I prefer the originals.

All of my favorite songs are still 10 years old or more.

Thanks.

I've at least heard of White Stripes, but I suspect that I wouldn't be able to pick them out of a line-up. I'll have to check them out.

I absolutely love the old standards and thought of Michael Buble, but I'd rather listen to Frank in that case, I think.

The Killers and Venus Hum are the only groups that have caught my attention in the last five years (enough to buy 2 albums each!) but no more.

Have you given the Australian band Wolfmother a try? C. thinks if you like The Killers, you'll like this band. Here's one song he likes a lot, plus probably their most well known song.

Happy Trick-or-Treat Day!

You know, I thought I had heard of them, then I looked at the video and was kind of repulsed - oddly, more so than I was by The Cure.

I think it was the combo of the 80s Robert Plant vocals (who is now touring with Allison Krauss - hear new stuff here!) with the 70s John Travolta white vest and the 60s Woodstock vibe that did it.

Weird - I do like what I've listened to of the Krauss/Plant country/bluesy collaboration this morning, though.

The Killers? I guess their previous hits weren't terrible, but have you heard the first single from their soon-to-be released album? The chorus repeats the eternal question: "Are we human, or are we dancers?"

It's a very different sound than their previous stuff. It's like a terrible synth-pop combination of O.M.D. and Meatloaf, mixed with the ultra-terrible "emo" trend of pseudo-angsty, whiny crap that is popular now. When I hear it played, I sit in amazement that it exists, that someone thought it should be the first single released, and that stations actually play it. It is THAT bad. Not even "so bad it's good" bad.

OK, enough about them. My favorite recent band find is Spoon. Get their latest album, "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga". It's fantastic. Kind of like early Lemonheads, with some Beatles-esque horns thrown in here and there.

And a band that I always think I shouldn't like, but still enjoy nearly every song I hear, is "Death Cab For Cutie." Re: their name... I just learned yesterday that it's an obscure Beatles reference from the "Magical Mystery Tour" movie.

Don't sugar-coat it, C. August. Tell me how you really feel about The Killers new song.

All right, I'll check out Spoon and Death Cab for Cutie.

Thanks.

This is all very exciting!

How about this?

White Stripes guy, Jack White with Alicia Keys in the new James Bond theme?

It doesn't have quite the orchestral grandeur of the others, but it's kind of gritty in a good way.

Oh - I guess I forgot to mention that I really liked Death Cab for Cutie but had to work a little harder for Spoon.

And Fiddler, Stephen loved Wolfmother. Go figure.
